Schaumburg, Ill. -- Sports medicine and rehabilitation is the newest specialty recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

The AVMA Council on Education recently recommended approval of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR) as a new veterinary specialty organization to the AVMA Executive Board, which granted provisional recognition to the college at its April meeting. The American Board of Veterinary Specialities also backed the recognition of the college, AVMA reports.

ACVSMR has grown since its formation in 2003 along with the emerging fields of equine and small-animal rehabilitation.

Organizers say two specialty categories will be offered -- one for equine and one for canine sports medicine and rehabilitation. ACVSMR leaders expect membership for the new specialty to reach 400 over the next few years.
