A urinalysis challenge: Answer 7a

DVM360 MAGAZINE

7 a — Try again.

This conclusion could not be established without knowledge of the patient’s hydration status, status of serum urea and creatinine concentrations and perhaps a water deprivation and vasopressin response test. At least some nephrons must be functioning to concentrate glomerular filtrate (specific gravity = 1.008-1.012) to a specific gravity of 1.020. However, urine specific gravity values of randomly obtained urine samples are usually ≥ 1.040. Further evaluation of this patient is warranted.
