AKC recognizes three new dog breeds
Irish Red and White Setter, Pyrenean Shepherd and Norwegian Buhund added to registries

DVM360 MAGAZINE

New York -- Three dog breeds were added to the American Kennel Club (AKC) registries recently, including the Irish Red and White Setter, Pyrenean Shepherd and Norwegian Buhund.

Registered breeds now total 161, AKC reports. All three became eligible for AKC registration and competition on Jan. 1. There will be an open registry until Jan. 1, 2012.

The Pyrenean Shepherd and Norwegian Buhund were added to the AKC's herding group, while the Irish Red and White Setter joins AKC's sporting group.

The latest move follows a series of actions required by AKC to recognize a dog breed. A number of board actions and requirements for each breed date back to 2003, including a minimum of 150 dogs with three generation pedigrees, a national breed club with members in a least 20 states and an AKC-approved breed standard.
