ClinQuiz: Equine parasites, answer 1A

1) A — Correct.

These eggs (embryos) of Anoplocephala perfoliata, a cestode of horses, can be identified by their characteristic shape (capital D) and a pyriform apparatus in the center of the egg. Chronic infection of horses with large numbers of A. perfoliata is associated with an increased incidence of colic,1 as well as intussusception, ileal impaction, and intestinal perforation. 2 Anoplocephala perfoliata eggs are not always detected in affected horses but when present can aid in identifying infections.
