First, apply 1-in. or 2-in. adhesive-tape stirrups on the lateral and medial sides of the limb. Then apply cast padding at the distal end of the extremity and continue it proximally to include the pelvis or shoulder. The cast padding application is complete when the entire limb, including the dorsum of the back, shoulder or hip, and the distal extremity are covered with two or three layers. This is a spica splint being applied to a dog with a femoral fracture.
