The board of trustees at Ohio State University on June 6 approved the first phase of an expansion and enhancement project for the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC), according to a university release. This approval will allow the project to begin mid-August 2014, with groundbreaking taking place in September.

According to the release, this phase will include a renovated intensive care unit for the Hospital for Companion Animals and a freestanding addition to the existing hospital building that will include faculty and staff offices as well as conference space.

“We are really pleased that the University Board of Trustees approved phase one of our construction project,” says Rustin Moore, DVM, PhD, DACVS, the Bud and Marilyn Jenne Chair of equine medicine, associate executive dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, and executive director of VMC. “We look forward to having a facility that reflects the excellence of our clinical and academic programs and the expert compassionate care that we provide to our patients and clients.”

The entire expansion and enhancement project calls for $30 million total. This will fund the construction and renovation of 57,000 square feet at the hospital, which will include clinical, teaching and surgery spaces, a new lobby and reception area, and improvements to other areas, according to the release.

“We are so appreciative of our generous donors who have helped to make phase one of this project a reality,” says Moore. “We are continuing to raise money for phases two through four of the VMC expansion and enhancement project, which are vitally important to our patient care, teaching and clinical discovery missions.”
