FDA bans extra-label use of antimicrobials in food animals

DVM360 MAGAZINE

Rockville, Md.- A new rule will go into effect this fall prohibiting the extra-label use of cephalosporin antimicrobial drugs in food animals.

The Food and Drug Administration gathered evidence showing that such use is likely to "contribute to the emergence of resistance and compromise human therapies," according to an FDA press release.

The ban will help protect consumers from antimicrobial-resistant strains of zoonotic foodborne bacterial pathogens and preserve the effectiveness of cephalosporin-class drugs in treating humans, the FDA says.

Comments on the rule will be accepted by the FDA until Sept. 2, but the rule will go into effect Oct. 1.
