Springfield, Ill. -- Illinois lawmakers have jumped on the bandwagon to ease the burden of student loans for veterinarians with a new program that will award students attending the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine $20,000 per year toward their education expenses.

House Bill 364 was signed into law Aug. 7 and focuses on rewarding students who plan to enter large-animal, public health and livestock concentrations in veterinary medicine.

The program will aid up to 120 students over its 10-year life-span, as it directs the university to enter into program agreements with up to four students in the first year, eight in the second year, 12 during the third year and 16 during the fourth year and thereafter until the program expires in July 2019.
