Manhattan, Kan. -- There soon will be online help for veterinarians with camelid questions, thanks to a $20,000 gift to Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine from the Mid-America Alpaca Foundation.
The gift will fund the first Web-based continuing education program focused specifically on llamas and alpacas, as well as other members of the camelid species.
The species requires specialized training, according to the college, and an increase in the number of U.S. alpaca farms has generated a need for information about these animals to be more accessible. The college, which has an Alpacas on Campus program, says it has been receiving daily phone calls asking for information about treating camelids. The new "virtual training" program will give veterinarians 24/7 access to the information they need, say school leaders.
