New veterinary scholarships offered in 2 states
In California, a new five-year scholarship was announced by the College of the Sequoias (COS) and the University of California-Davis Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center. The scholarship will be awarded beginning in the fall semester as part of the COS' Hispanic-serving Institutions Education Grants Program. The $50,000 scholarship will go to a veterinary medicine major who participated in the COS Vet-Tech Program before pursuing a degree in veterinary medicine at UC-Davis. The scholarship will cover tuition, books and supplies, work/study, travel and a faculty mentor.
Louisiana State University is increasing its scholarships, too, with Dean Peter Haynes supplementing all 20 endowed scholarships so that each student will receive at least a $2,000 award from the annual fund. The school's goal is to increase that award to $5,000 per annual award in the near future. More than $130,000 was awarded to students at the school in 2008.
