One Health Commission will call Iowa State home

DVM360 MAGAZINE

Ames, Iowa -- The One Health Commission, formed in 2009 to establish a collaboration between human and animal health professionals, has chosen the Iowa State University Research Park as its new headquarters.

Executive Director Dr. Roger Mahr, DVM and former American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) president, says Iowa is the perfect place to house the One Health Commission because of its outreach, research and cooperative education offerings.

“This significant commitment of interdisciplinary leadership put forth by Iowa State University and its One Health consortium provides the broad foundational support needed by the Commission to become fully operational, to establish a ‘go-to resource’ for all things One Health,” says Mahr.

The One Health Commission is focusing its research on rising threats to human and animal health, including an increase in zoonotic diseases, the rise of antibiotic resistance, how environmental health affects human and animal health, and emerging animal diseases.

Member organizations of the One Health Commission now include AVMA, the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Public Health Association (APHA), the Association of Academic Health Centers (AAHC), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) and the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA).
