MONTPELIER, VT. — Vermont is considering a new law that would allow pet owners to recover non-economic damages.
Senate Bill 240 would allow a pet owner to recover non-economic damages for emotional distress from a person who intentionally
or recklessly causes the death of his or her pet. Damages may include loss of companionship, love and affection of the pet.
Vermont's courts previously have considered and rejected claims for emotional damages in cases of pet loss.
