CHARLESTON, W.V. — Some West Virginia lawmakers want to change the requirements and scope of practice for registered veterinary technicians.
Proposed legislation (H.B. 2753), introduced Jan. 11, would institute new requirements and responsibilities for registered
veterinary technicians.
The legislation seeks to allow veterinary technicians, who meet the appropriate education/training, to administer anesthesia;
perform prophylaxis; establish open airways and more. A number of other duties may be performed under general or direct supervision
and include intravenous catheterization and applying medications and treatments.
The requirements also state the applicant must be of good moral character, have a degree in veterinary technology from an
accredited school, pass the state's examination, not be convicted of a crime involving "moral turpitude" or any felony within
five years of the application date, and not be convicted of any misdemeanor crime involving veterinary technology or animal
abuse.
