Dr. Bartels is the McCasland Professor of Laser Surgery for the Department of Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Oklahoma State University (OSU). He also holds the Cohn Chair for Animal Care at OSU and is the director of the Sarkeys Surgical Laser Laboratory. He has published more than 70 articles and numerous book chapters involving surgery and the use of lasers in both man and animals.

Dr. Bartges received his veterinary degree from the University of Georgia in 1987, and completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Minnesota. After the internship, he completed his residency training in internal medicine and nutrition and a Ph.D. program at the University of Minnesota in 1993. Following a one-year post-doctoral position at the University of Minnesota, he joined the faculty at the University of Georgia as an Assistant Professor of Nutrition. In 1997, he joined the faculty at The University of Tennessee as an Associate Professor of Medicine and Nutrition. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, review articles, and book chapters, and has spoken at more than 80 local, regional, national, and international meetings.
