Hartz initiates voluntary recall on dog treats

Secaucus, N.J. -- Hartz Mountain Corp. is recalling a dog treat due to concerns over the risk of Salmonella contamination.

In fact, the Food and Drug Administration reports the company initiated a voluntary recall on some 74,700 8-ounce bags of Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats for Dogs. The products lot code is BZ0969101E, UPC number 32700-11519.

The company reports the potentially contaminated lot was imported by Hartz from a Brazilian supplier, Bertin S.A. Those products were distributed to a number of customers in the United States.

"Although Hartz has not received any reports of animals or humans becoming ill as a result of coming into contact with this product, Hartz is taking immediate steps to remove the product from all retail stores and distribution centers, the company reports.
