Detection of numerous bacterial rods in a fresh urine sample collected by cystocentesis indicates that at least 10,000 bacteria/ml of urine are present, so the bacteriuria is unlikely to represent contamination. The inflammatory response may have preceded or followed the bacterial infection. Since the sample was collected by cystocentesis, it could involve at least the bladder, ureters or kidneys. Urethral involvement cannot be ruled out, however.
